Cloud observability review playbook
A practical checklist for defining service health, useful telemetry, actionable alerts and reviewable incident response.
Define the user-facing service
Start with the operation a user needs to complete. Write down what successful service means, the observation window and the team that owns it. Agree a service-level objective before choosing alert thresholds; a dashboard full of infrastructure numbers does not by itself explain user impact.
Connect signals to an investigation
Choose metrics that describe traffic, errors and response time. Decide which logs and traces an engineer needs when a signal changes. Keep request context useful without putting credentials, form contents or unnecessary personal information into telemetry.
Make alerts actionable
For each alert, name an owner, the response expected and the runbook to follow. Separate conditions requiring immediate intervention from trends that can be reviewed during working hours. Review noisy alerts and gaps after incidents rather than increasing thresholds without evidence.
Retain the response trail
Record the trigger, observed impact, actions considered, deployment or rollback decision and recovery evidence. Run a controlled exercise to check that responders can find the necessary information and that access still works when the service is degraded.
Use established guidance
Google’s SRE monitoring guidance explains the roles of service indicators, metrics and diagnostic logs. Use it as a reference for a scoped discussion with our DevOps and MLOps team; no uptime or response-time commitment is implied by this checklist.
